Alzheimers St. Louis

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related, non-reversible brain disorder that develops over a period of years. Initially, people experience memory loss and confusion, which may be mistaken for the kinds of memory changes that are sometimes associated with normal aging. However, the symptoms of AD gradually lead to behavior and personality changes, a decline in cognitive abilities such as decision-making and language skills, and problems recognizing family and friends. AD ultimately leads to a severe loss of mental function. These losses are related to the worsening breakdown of the connections between certain neurons in the brain and their eventual death. AD is one of a group of disorders called dementias that are characterized by cognitive and behavioral problems. It is the most common cause of dementia among people age 65 and older.   Source:    National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institutes of Health

Advances in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s With one in eight older Americans getting Alzheimer’s in their lifetime, and the shocking statistic that Alzheimer’s is one of the highest causes of death in the U.S., it is becoming more and more important for new treatments and cures for Alzheimer’s. While there is no known cure to Alzheimer’s, medicines are getting better and advances are still being made in the field. Progress includes understanding the mechanisms of the disease, controlling and understanding dementia, and new medications to help slow its progression.

Understanding Dementia:  Dementia is one of the worst symptoms  of Alzheimer’s but recent developments are learning to understand it, and some of the advances allow for better treatment, which is very beneficial. Doctors now understand the differences between dementia caused by Alzheimer’s and other diseases, which also allows for better recognition and diagnosis of the disease. Other advances, including new understandings of the biochemistry behind Alzheimer’s boost these findings and allow doctors to better recognize and treat Alzheimer’s symptoms. For example, the gene for the apolipoprotein E ∈ 4 allele is much more common in person with Alzheimer’s than in those without it.

Medications for Memory Loss: While memory loss is still the most prevalent symptom of Alzheimer’s disease, there are now medications that help to prevent memory loss, and to slow its progression. Cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine are both used treat cognitive symptoms like confusion, memory loss, and thinking problems, to allow people with Alzheimer’s to live more normally. The two types of drugs are used both separately and together depending on the case.Delaying Progression: While drugs cannot yet cure Alzheimers, there are several options that help to delay the progression of symptoms. The two main drugs in this sector are tacrine and donezepil, which are mostly available as Cognex and Aricept, the two drugs, both of which can return a patient to their condition 6-12 months prior to starting treatment over time, although the patient will eventually slowly begin to slide into symptoms again.

Late Stage Care: There are also multiple new advances in late stage care, or the care of people with advanced Alzheimers. New research shoes doctors where patients are suffering, so that they can treat and better care for people who cannot communicate for themselves. This is important because many of the patients in medical care are left with poor care when they cannot communicate pain or discomfort.

While the advances in Alzheimer’s are already quite a bit compared to twenty years ago, there are also many drugs to help slow and prevent symptoms in clinical trials, meaning that the medicine and treatment available might improve again within just a few years time. New tests that are being studied include methods of advance warning for identifying persons likely to get Alzheimer’s, so that they can begin treatment before major progression of the disease. Other drugs are being tested for reducing the inflammation and working with the protein markers caused by Alzheimer’s, and of course, doctors and biologists around the world are still working to cure or help prevent or slow Alzheimer’s further.

Alzheimer’s disease affects an estimated 1 in 10 people over age 65.

Natural Skin Care

What is Natural skin care?

Put simply, ‘natural skin care’ is caring for your skin in a natural and chemical-free way. ‘Natural skin care’ advocates enabling the skin to take care of itself (without any assistance from synthetic materials/ chemicals). ‘Natural skin care’ is about inculcation of good habits in the way you lead your day to day life. A lot of natural skin care measures are actually the same as those for body care in general. So let’s see what these natural skin care measures are.

Well the first and the foremost natural skin care measure is – ‘Drink a lot of water’.  Around 8 glasses of water is a must everyday. Water helps in flushing out the toxins from the body, in a natural way. It helps in the overall upkeep of the body and promotes good health for all organs (not just skin).

General cleanliness is another inexpensive way of natural skin care.  Daily shower, wearing clean clothes and sleeping on a clean mattress/pillow are all part of general cleanliness. After all, clean skin is the key to keeping the skin disorders at bay. Regular exercise is the next thing on the cards. Exercise increases the flow of blood that helps in getting rid of body toxins and keeping you healthy.  Exercise also helps in beating stress which is the worst enemy of good health.

Healthy food and eating habits are also recommended for natural skin care.  Some type of food (e.g. oily food) is know to cause acne and should be avoided as much as possible. Your diet should be a healthy mix of various nutrient providing foods. Raw fruits and vegetables are known to provide freshness to your body and help in getting rid of body toxins.

A good sleep is also instrumental in maintaining good health and in beating stress. As a natural skin care measure, a good sleep delays slacking of skin.

Beating stress is another natural skin care therapy. Stress causes overall damage to body and health. Drinking a lot of water, getting a sound sleep and exercise has already been mentioned as stress busters. Indulging in a warm bubble bath, listening to music and playing your favourite sport are also good ways of beating stress. Yoga is yet another way of beating stress; it is fast gaining popularity amongst the masses.

Avoiding excessive exposure to sun (by wearing long sleeved clothes, hat and umbrella etc), is another natural skin care strategy. Sunscreen lotions are also recommended as necessary. A lot of traditional and home made natural skin care products/ measures are also known to be very effective. Such measures are not only natural and easy-to-follow, but also relatively inexpensive.  Besides that, a lot of natural skin care products are available in the commercial market. These include things like lavender oil, aloe vera etc., which don’t have any side effects.

Mammograms St. Louis

Why is it important to get a mammogram?

It is important to get a mammogram because this is the best tool to help you detect cancer at an early stage. The earlier you get to learn about cancer signs, the better you are able to defend yourself against cancer. Doctors recommend early mammogram screening as the earlier you are able to detect cancer, the lower the risk of death from the disease. In fact, early detection helps to reduce the risk of death by between 25 and 30 percent.

Mammograms St. Louis

It is commonly understood in Women’s health care should get a mammogram after they have passed their fortieth birthday and, in some cases, even earlier as it can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 75 percent. As soon as you are able to detect cancer, you can begin treatment at an early stage of the disease. This increases your chances of survival and in fact, there is no reason not to get a mammogram. Many women avoid getting their mammogram done because they are afraid of the procedure. However, the right course of action is to take good control over your life and undergo the mammogram.

Reduces cancer mortality

The simple truth is mammography cuts the risk of cancer mortality by almost forty percent. Furthermore, of every 1000 women who have undergone mammography, one hundred of them will be recalled for another round of mammography. Only twenty of them require needle biopsy and just five will be diagnosed with cancer.

Helps save lives

The truth is mammogram helps to save lives as they can detect cancer when it is still in its small stage and this means that timely treatment will give you a better chance of survival. Of every eight women, about one will get breast cancer. Screening mammograms are the very pinnacle of early detection of breast cancer and they are fully capable of detecting lumps about two to three years before a STL health care provider can feel them. Women who undergo regular mammogram screenings have a twenty-five percent better chance of survival.

Family history patients

Although women who have a family history of breast cancer are more prone to getting breast cancer themselves, the bigger risk is in women who have passed their fiftieth birthday. In fact, eighty percent of breast cancer patients are those who have passed their fiftieth birthday.

Do not feel afraid

Women should not feel afraid of mammography. It is in fact a quick procedure that only lasts 20 minutes and does not cause much discomfort. It is a safe procedure in which you will only be exposed to minimal radiation. Women with dense breasts and those who are under fifty years of age ought to choose digital mammogram. Once they have been screened, they should take their mammogram films/results with them.

Also, after getting a mammogram from one facility, it makes sense to return for the next one after a year so that it is possible to compare mammograms year to year.

Before being screened, make sure you are not wearing a deodorant or antiperspirant as they will interfere with the results. The bottom line is mammograms are the most potent tools to detect breast cancer. Visit your STL health provider to get one. Even so, it bears keeping in mind that mammograms can still not detect twenty percent of breast cancers. This is because some signs are invisible with this particular technique.

Thus, you should also be prepared to undergo self-examination of your breasts and a clinical breast examination may also be required to detect breast cancer. However, these are complimentary tools and there is in fact no substitute for mammograms.

Healthcare is becoming more mobile.

The internet allows us to communicate, but at the same time it also delivers a lot of information, it also helps make our lives easier. And this also translates in the healthcare world as well. More and more internet-based solutions are coming, and they are revolutionizing the world how we know it.

Nowadays, people can use an app to book an appointment with a St. Louis health provider. This can be done from a mobile phone as well. In fact, the healthcare world is following the overall trend worldwide. More than 50% of all internet users come from mobile, and the reason for that is people love portability. They want immediate access and great value, and mobility offers such a thing.

Healthcare Mobility

In the case of healthcare solutions, they tend to be either informational, or they can actively help the patient interact with a doctor. Some mobile apps will allow people to ask a question and a vetted doctor will reply to them. Other apps are created specifically to help you to focus on mobility and value as much as possible.

Then there’s the fact that medical institutions are active on social media too. They can offer immediate help, guidelines, and ideas to people that feel very bad and need immediate medical attention. The same thing happens if you need help with any child-related information and support. All these things are extremely helpful, and they bring in front outstanding potential all the time, which is an amazing thing.

It’s also better to use mobile apps and connect to a true medical professional. Most doctors are not happy with the fact that there’s tons of misinformation online. And if you try to self-diagnose, you can end up doing more harm than good. Thanks to mobile apps that are internet-connected, it’s a lot easier for you to find the best results and the value is indeed extremely impressive due to that.

Mobility in Modern Healthcare

Mobile apps also offer better communication and training for the healthcare professionals. It’s better to use these apps in order to check on stuff and manage the hospitals. Plus, many times mobile apps like these tend to lower the overall expenditure, and that translates into a great ROI for the medical institution. Implementing such a system and creating it may be a bit expensive at first, but once you do that you just have to adjust and adapt it to your own needs, which is simple and very convenient as well.

There are lots of countries and US states where you can find amazing healthcare systems with mobile support. And the good thing is that their spread is better and better every year. Digitizing the healthcare systems also offers immediate access to the patient’s information. In the end that can be an extremely good idea. While we still have a long way to go until the entire healthcare system is digital in all countries, we do have a start. And that’s extremely important!

St. Louis Students Join the Fight Against Blood Cancer

Students Join the Fight Against Blood Cancer

Schools are signing up for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Student Series, a Life-Saving Fundraising Program

St. Louis, MO (August 23, 2018) – Leukemia affects more children than any other cancer, so The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Series program provides a meaningful way for kids to help kids. These programs engage millions of students from thousands of schools across the U.S., from elementary through high school, to teach them how to set and reach goals and the value of community involvement with programs they design to raise funds to support the LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Student Series is a series of service learning, character education and philanthropy programs where students gain the unique experience of helping thousands of people in their fight against blood cancers. Programs are tailored to each school level so students can grow with the Student Series and have an even greater impact on the lives of patients:

  • Pennies for Patients is a three-week program for Elementary and Middle Schools where students collect change and raise funds online while learning about service and philanthropy. Thanks to Olive Garden, Student Series’ national partner, LLS has designed a series of lesson plans for teachers to use in the classroom in response to the growing trend of making serving learning and character education part of the curriculum. The lesson plans integrate the theme of LLS’s Pennies for Patients programs into all academic areas.
  • Collect For Cures is a program for high school students to demonstrate leadership, creativity and teamwork to make an impact and raise money for blood cancer research.
  • Students of the Year is the leadership development and philanthropy program for highly motivated high school students. Individual Students and teams they form participate in a fundraising competition to benefit LLS.

In the 2018-19 Student Series campaign, LLS is offering a comprehensive K-8 STEM curriculum to schools registered in a Student Series program, and will provide teachers with hands-on experiential activities and lessons that cover key Common Core skills.

Since it began in 1993, Student Series has helped LLS invest almost $1 billion in research to advance breakthrough cancer treatments that are saving lives today, and improving the quality of life for patients and their families.

“By participating, not only will kids learn about making an impact, but about leadership, teamwork, philanthropy and what “doing good” for others can mean,” said Debbie Kersting, LLS’s Gateway Chapter Executive Director. “It’s a program that is truly meaningful because kids learn that their efforts really make a difference. As children move through their years at school, they can grow with the Student Series.”

Hypnosis for Weight Loss

Hypnosis Weight Loss: Some Ways to Stop the Weighting

Controlling your weight and avoiding weight gain as you get older are important ways to prevent a host of weight-related health problems.

Indeed, if you are more than 20 pounds over your ideal weight, you are at greater risk for a rogues’ gallery of potentially deadly conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, endometrial cancer, obstructive sleep apnea, and breast cancer.

What’s more, most people who are overweight tend to avoid exercise, and that avoidance just adds to the toll paid for extra pounds.

If you have a sedentary lifestyle and are overweight, you are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and other health problems. And, if you already have a medical condition such as high cholesterol, being overweight puts you at higher risk for complications.

The good news is that even modest amounts of weight loss can improve your health significantly. Loss of 10% of body weight can reduce blood pressure, high cholesterol, triglyceride, and high blood sugar levels.

Today, there are many procedures that can contribute and help people loss weight effectively. One of the known procedure in losing weight is through hypnosis.

However, many misconceptions have come up with regards to the application of hypnosis in losing eight. And because it does not involve drugs or any kinds of medications and surgery, many people tend to think that losing weight through hypnosis seems to be one of the safest weight loss program.

To know more about hypnosis and its effects on losing weight, here is a list of some facts that will give you an insight about what it can do to your body weight.

  1. Hypnosis can be an imminently risky if not done properly and not utilize by people who are highly trained with the real concept of hypnosis.

Even if many people tend to think that hypnosis will not pose imminent danger to their health, still, it is important to know that the person who will do the procedure is skilled enough and that he or she knows what factors to consider before doing the procedures.

  1. Hypnosis alone cannot eliminate excess fat from the body and, therefore, make somebody lose weight.

Most health experts contend that hypnosis should only be a part of a whole assimilated process. It should never be used as the sole weight loss procedure.

Moreover, one session of hypnosis will only have very minimal results on an individual’s weight. When losing weight, hypnosis matched with psychotherapy will be more effective than hypnosis alone. This is because hypnosis is only a state of deeply relaxing the mind, in which one can still be in control of his or her own body.

  1. Hypnosis is one way of getting into the subliminal state of a person. When a person is on the “hypnotic stage,” the body is more responsive to suggestibility because of its intensified state of concentration.

However, this does not necessarily mean that through hypnosis, one can already “reprogram” the mind of an individual.

In reality, hypnosis can only run the range from trouble-free relaxation condition to proper initiation managed by a professional hypnotists. Hence, it should not be considered paranormal and magical in its upshots.

Boiled down, people should be more aware that hypnosis is not a sole effective process in losing weight. It is more of a facilitator of various treatment techniques.

Therefore, it should be combined with other weight loss management program to be effective in making people lose excess weight. In this manner, people will be able to lose more weight with a more relaxed and refreshed state of mind.

As they say, a healthy mind is a healthy body
